I then learned that a pub once sat on the corner, and neighborhood lore says that Houdini had a tunnel running from his house to the pub. The next door neighbor joked that Harry visits him from time to time.

I arrived at noon and lingered outside, chatting with the friendly neighbors and playing with their cat. The official open house was scheduled for 1:00pm, but I had arranged to meet the realtor, Beverley Draggon of Douglas Elliman Real Estate, at 12:30 for a private pre-tour. I've been struggling in how to best describe the house and all that I saw last Sunday, so I figure I'll just lay it out exactly as I experienced it. So 278, inside and out, is still very much the house Houdini inhabited. There has also been no modern upgrades, such as the installation of central air-conditioning, which means the ceilings and walls all remain as they were. All the rooms are pretty much as they were in Houdini's time. While the top two floors have been converted into individual apartments, there really has not been dramatic changes to the structure. One thing I'll say up front is that fears the interior of 278 had been radically changed are, happily, unfounded.
